How Can You Empower Your Students?

Empowerment

According to Pams (2013) empowerment refers to the promoting the skill, self-esteem and knowledge to manage the stressful ad traumatic circumstances. Students are the future of the society, so they need a healthy environment to reach their full potential that is called self-actualization. According to Abraham Maslow in his theory of basic need if five basic needs of an individual is full filled, than the individual will reach at his full potential and is considered to be self-actualized to achieve his goal. Each of the needs of the Maslow hierarchy of needs should be fulfilled, one cannot move forward if any of the need is not achieve its milestones.

How a teacher can empower their students?

Teacher is person who teach us something, instruct us. An effective teacher teach us ‘Out of Box’. Effective teacher not only help the student in their syllabus but also teach them skills that they actually need to be compete in this fast modern world. I will appreciate my teachers who encourages me, motivates me and helps me in all matters, they make me more empowered. So an effective teacher is also an inspiration for their students.

Here, is some techniques to empower the students in the classroom settings.

1- Improving Self Esteem

For empowerment self-esteem is very important. Maslow considered self-esteem just before the self-actualization need, if an individual have low self-esteem, than he/she cannot be fully actualized. Basically self-esteem describe your sense of self-worth as how you see you self, its different form the confident. Self-esteem helps in the increasing self-empowerment. Self-empowerment will help you to be assertive, achieve your goal, strengthen your abilities and polish your skills. So there is very strong connection between self-esteem and empowerment.

2- Provide Constructive critic and empowerment

The goal of the empowerment is to enhance the skills of the students for this purpose the teacher need to provide a constructive critic to their students so that they improve. They aim behind criticism should be empowerment not to degrade and insult the student that result in many other psychological problems that will also affect the academics.

3- Self-Reflection

Self-reflection is another technique that a teacher can teach to the student. The basic aim of the technique is help student to be able to self-evaluation. Self-reflection some time also called self-Assessment. It develop a sense of introspection in the student and they start to evaluate their own progress consciously that make them move toward the self-discovery.

Steps of self-Reflection

· Describe yourself ( what was the situation or what happened)

· Describe your feelings ( what was your feelings and thoughts about that situation)

· Evaluation ( Examine what was the pros and cons of the situation and your experience)

· Make a conclusion ( what you can do )

· Take the action (make an action plan for the next time)

4- Self-regulated leaning

Teaching student’s self-regulation will also help them to empower. When regulate their own learning they get deeper inside to their knowledge, as how they are learning, what is best for them and on which they need to work hard. So a teacher have to teach their students self-regulation that will help them to empower.

There are some techniques by which students can learn self-regulation:

· Learn about your thinking pattern

· Notice your thoughts

· Challenge and validate your thoughts

· Replace your negative critical thoughts with the productive and positive thoughts.

5- Problem Solving Technique

Problem solving is another best technique to empower the students. Problem solving is the life skill that everyone should learn. It is process in which an individual learn to identify the problem and find some possible solutions of the problem. Problem solving not help the students in the personal life, academic life but also in professional life.

There are following five basic steps to problem solving:

· Make a list of the problem

· Priorities the problem that need to be solved first

· Make a list of the solutions

· Do Cost-Benefit analysis of the every solution one by one

· Select the solution that have more benefits

Conclusion

So, empowering the student will help them to lead the world and a teacher is the main source after the family that will help the individual to deal with difficult circumstances. By teaching above mention techniques the teacher will help their students to self-empowerment.
